De Rotterdam rose on the Wilhelminapier, from where tens of thousands of Europeans emigrated to America with the Holland America Line between 1873 and 1973. The name of the project refers to the flagship of the Holland America Line, the Rotterdam.
The building is part of the transformation of the pier into a residential and commercial area.
It can be seen as a vertical city, bringing together a mix of functions in one building: residences, offices, conference facilities, a hotel, shops, restaurants, leisure facilities and a parking garage.
This creates activity around the clock. After years of planning, construction of one of the largest buildings in the Netherlands began at the end of 2009.

With the arrival of several completed and still-to-be-built residential towers, the number of residents on the Kop van Zuid has increased significantly in recent years. The district currently has 1,115 residents, who have a relatively high level of education and income.
